European debut of Ilie Dumitrescu at Steaua took place in Ghencea, in front of 18.000 fans. The hosts started the match well, Bicfalvi being blocked in the last minute by Colina (2), in his race to the post of Konig. The Swiss were cautious, but tried to "bite" on the counter attack, Tatarusanu being forced to reject the shots of Zuber and Salatic. Steaua weren't too dangerous in attack, only the shots of Latovlevici being dangerous, Konig being forced to reject two torpedos in 32nd and 41st minutes. Undoubtedly, Steaua lacked the clarity and focus in front of the post, single important phases coming after shots from long distance. The Swiss started the second half more offensive and Tatarusanu saved the goal in front of Rennella, who remained alone with the goalkeeper after a very good pass from Cabanas (46). The same Rennella had a great chance to open the score, but he tried a pretentious execution, but Tatarusanu managed again to block the ball in front of Italian striker (51). The match became more balanced and Steaua continued to press, the goal coming in 71st minute, when Bogdan Stancu shot excellent from 23 meters, without hope for goalkeeper Konig. The Swiss didn't give up and could level the score in 81st minute, when the shot of Cabanas missed the post of Tatarusanu with a few cm. Steaua won with 1-0, but their game needs more corrections, especially in the offensive.
Ilie Dumitrescu, coach of Steaua: "We met a very well organized team, a team physically prepared, who changed their system of playing comparing with previous games. They came with a surprise today, strengthening the median line. I'm happy that we didn't concede goal, but I am sorry that we missed so many opportunities. Bogdan Stancu made the difference today. In Zurich it will be a difficult match, but we will do anything to qualify. I thank to the fans, they were great tonight, I really did not expect to come so many people to the stadium. I remembered the great times when I was player at Steaua". |
